A masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic, the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória (Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória) was built as an achievement of the promise of King John I to the Virgin Mary for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota against the Spanish army. In fact, it is a huge monastic complex that has undergone changes over two centuries of construction and has never been finished.

In addition to the Monastery, where the church and the cloisters alone impress, the Capela do Funaddor (Chapel of the Founder) was added, where D. João I and his wife rest, among others, and D. Duarte's pantheon, commonly called Capelas Imperfeitas or, more correctly," unfinished chapels ". These are the ones that exhibit the most curious show of late Gothic that makes us imagine how they really would have been if they had been finished.
