Alcobaça

In Alcobaça, stands out the Real Abadia de Santa Maria (Royal Abbey of Santa Maria), known simply as Mosteiro de Alcobaça (Monastery of Alcobaça). It was founded in 1153 by order of Cister, in fulfilment of a vote made by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, for the reconquest to the Moors of the city of Santarém in 1147.

In the beautiful Monastery, the first in Gothic style in Portugal, stands out the majestic church, where the sight and besides the lengths, the ambulatory complex and the tombs of the eternal passionate Dom Pedro and D. Inês de Castro separates in life that have been placed face-to-face for eternity.

It is also worth mentioning the cloister that transports us to the monk’s way of life at the time they lived in the monastery.
